Background

LWF had settled an emergency operation in CAR since 2013 in response to the protracted humanitarian crisis caused by armed conflicts. Responding in 5 prefectures the LWF CAR program is strategically focused the following main sectors: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security & Livelihoods, Protection and Social cohesion. From August 2018, LWF got engaged in the Nutrition sector funded by its related agency, the Church of Sweden. This project has been implemented in Bouca sub-prefecture in partnership with the local Ministry of Health and Unicef. As Church of Sweden project is ending 31 of May, Unicef has proposed to extend the project through six months funding, to cover 18 health units in the area.

Purpose of the position

Based in Bossangoa, the nearest town where the project is implemented, the Nutritionist will provide technical and managerial support to the project team. She/he will build a strong leadership in the project area to ensure that, this project is implemented in compliance with all technical standards and requirements to which both UNICEF and LWF adhere. The post holder will have a key role to train LWF and Ministry of Health staff.

Position Environment and Dimensions

This position is created to cover the lack of technical expertise on the local employment market in CAR. Under the supervision of the Area Coordinator this staff will closely work in collaboration with the finance, administration, HR and logistic teams to ensure activities are carried out in respect of existing procedures and policies. As the leader of this project team, she/he will collaborate with partners including Unicef, Health Zone, Ministry of Health Nutrition unit, community structures and other organisations on the ground to ensure healthy relationship with all stakeholders.

This position requires frequent field visits in Bouca district in order to provide the needed technical support and on-job training to the project team. The living location could change depending on the work dimensions and context.

Required Qualifications

A university degree in medical/health sciences with nutrition orientation/specialization.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Good knowledge of new developments in the nutrition sector; this means mastering all new nutritional protocol of clinical and community management of malnutrition cases.
  • Able to manage the whole process of nutritional surveys; write narrative and statistical reports in French.
  • Substantial previous experience in supervising and monitoring the management of acute malnutrition.
  • Good ability to work in a participatory and inclusive manner and ensuring accountability.
  • High capacity to adapt and perform with autonomy in volatile security situation and resource scare environment.
  • Ability to organize, analyse, plan and evaluate his own and work of his teams.
  • Must have a good command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other statistical software such as SPSS, EPI Info.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good understanding of humanitarian standards and principles.
  • Experience and perfect knowledge of the aforementioned areas.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity and commitment to gender equity, protection, environmental protection and HIV/ AIDS issues.
  • Adherence and commitment to LWF vision, mission, values and principles.

Main Duties

The nutritionist is assigned to perform the following tasks:

  • To plan and follow up the implementation of nutrition activities in the field, in collaboration with service providers and management staff of the health zones.
  • To provide technical support to community structures in order to enable them to participate, assess malnutrition and propose local solutions.
  • To organize, in collaboration with the National Nutrition Unit and the bureau of the health zone, training of service providers and community animators from local structures on the current community based management of malnutrition protocols.
  • To elaborate terms of reference for training and evaluations in collaboration with the Area Coordinator.
  • To plan and coordinate joint supervisions in collaboration with the MoH staff.
  • To organise refresh sessions and other learning workshops for capacity building purposes.
  • To supervise data collection and epidemiological analysis in order to follow up trends of malnutrition for timely decision.
  • To ensure the supply chain of nutritional inputs, non-food items at the health facility level is maintained.
  • To follow up indicators, ensuring that nutritional standards agreed in the protocol are met.
  • To share monthly narrative reports with the supervisor who has responsibility to share them with UNICEF.
  • To monitor the security situation and timely share relevant information and updates with the supervisor.
  • To attend relevant coordination meetings in the field.
